HDD or SSD?

The hard disk in any computer is responsible for storing data and is therefore one of the main components of the device. Drives can come in two versions: HDD and SSD. The HDD, or hard disk drive, is mainly used to store rarely used files. The platter design of HDD is characterised by slower access times, making files load slower. SSDs, or solid-state drives, are based on NAND FLASH memory, which allows instant access to selected files. Server drives are designed for continuous operation, unlike regular drives installed in desktop or laptop computers.

SSDs are more reliable than HDDs because they have lower failure rates - they don't have moving parts that can fail, which is why SSDs are recommended for server applications. However, if you're thinking about choosing HDDs for your IT system, pay attention to the speed of the platter. Popular SSDs for servers are dedicated components and prove to be memory space for years to come.

Server SSDs - parameters

The most popular solution for SSDs in servers are:
- 2.5"" SATA (240GB, 480GB, 960GB, 1.92TB, 3.84TB, 7.68TB)
- 2.5"" SAS (400GB, 480GB, 800GB, 960GB, 1.6TB, 1.92TB, 3.2TB, 3.84TB)
- M.2 NVMe (480GB, 960GB, 1.92TB)
- U.2/U.3 NVMe (960GB, 1.92TB, 3.84TB, 7.68TB)

You should also pay attention to the disk protocol you want to use in the device. The safest solution are SATA drives because they will work for you. Another solution, if someone wants to have disks in RAID are SAS SSD. SATA/SAS disk controllers are readily available and most even older devices will not have problems with operation. The latest solution is NVMe drives. Unfortunately in most cases you will need a software RAID. Controllers that support RAID disks are new solutions for our server solutions.

In addition to internal drives, which are mounted via suitable interfaces, external hard drives are also available. These are usually connected to the computer or laptop via a USB port. They can be used to back up important data stored on the computer. They are then securely isolated and protected from potential virtual attacks.
