How the Computing Station for ZUT Szczecin Was Built – Behind One of Our Most Rewarding Projects

Every project starts with an inquiry. This one came from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin – an institution we know well, connected to us for years not only geographically, but also through people.

The inquiry concerned a powerful workstation to support an international research project led by prof. dr hab. eng. Krzysztof Okarma, funded by the National Science Centre under the IMPRESS-U program.

Its goal is exploratory research on generative data compression from LiDAR – a technology with huge potential in satellite analyses and artificial intelligence.

Challenge: Tight Budget

Such a configuration is a powerful tool – but also comes at a noticeable cost. Unfortunately, the total value of the components exceeded the research project’s budget of 50,000 PLN. At this point, close cooperation with partners and operational flexibility were key.

Our long-term partner – ASUS Poland – stepped in, positively responding to our request for support dedicated to Polish universities. Thanks to their engagement, we optimized the cost of key platform components – including the motherboard and cooling solutions – significantly reducing the final configuration cost.

But that wasn’t all. Simultaneously, the ESUS IT team worked to acquire 512 GB ECC REG RAM, which – given the volume and specifications – is difficult to obtain through typical supply chains. Leveraging our long-term relationships with enterprise suppliers and access to off-market stock, we assembled the required set safely, on time, and within budget.

For Us – Something Personal

For our team, this project also had a personal dimension. The ESUS IT specialist leading the project is himself a graduate of WPUT. For him, this was not just another implementation, but a true return to the university – this time not as a student, but as a provider of professional solutions supporting scientific development. Collaborating with former professors, entering modern laboratories, and knowing that the equipment we deliver will help future generations of researchers – this is priceless.

Result?

Today, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at WPUT operates an advanced liquid-cooled workstation supporting AI research, signal processing, and data analysis from space missions. This is the result of well-chosen equipment, relationships with technology partners, and simple human attentiveness.
